Translation Strategies For Objectivity Of Sentence Statement Of English For Science And Technology

Currently, research on the translation of English for Science and Technology(EST) has been conducted in the following aspects: skopos theory, functional equivalence theory, relevance theory, Catford's translation shifts theory and variation theory etc., and studies on translation methods and strategies based on specific cases. However, very few studies are done from the perspective of objectivity and translation strategies of sentence statement of EST. Hence,a study on the specific strategies of objectivity of sentence statement of EST is initiated, with reference to the translation of Programming Languages and Lambda Calculi from Chapter one to Chapter four. Based on the translation practice of the author of this thesis, the translation strategies of objectivity of sentence statement of EST are discussed from four aspects: tense, voice, modality and mood. With respect to tense, simple present tense is frequently used in EST, and meanwhile, simple past tense, present perfect tense and simple future tense are also often used in EST, and these tenses can be translated into corresponding adverbs of time in Chinese. Relating to voice,passive voice are extensively adopted in EST and five translation methods including literal translation, translation of conversion, modified translation, translation of omission and adapted translation can be adopted during translation.As regards modality, modal verbs are used to illustrate some possible deviations between its own statement and a true proposition, which can be translated into the corresponding auxiliary verbs in Chinese according to their scales of modality value in English. From the perspective of mood, subjunctive mood is applied in EST to express the propositions that are hard to be materialized. The translation of this kind of mood can be realized by deploying corresponding fixed expressions in Chinese according to sentence structures of original texts. Therefore,during translating,grasping the basic paradigm of EST in terms of tense,voice,modality and mood can reflect the objectivity of the original text to the maximum extent.
