A Translation Report On Invitation To Computer Science

This translation report is based on the author’s translation practice. The source text of her practice is excerpted from Invitation to Computer Science, co-authored by G. Michael Schneider and Judith L. Gersting. The translator takes the preface and the first chapter of the textbook as her object of practice. The excerpted source text summarizes the main contents of the book, clarifies three misconceptions about computer science, explains what algorithm classifications are and introduces a brief history of computer science.Invitation to Computer Science is a scientific and technological text. In the practice, the translator encounters quantities of scientific terms and technological expressions. The first problem she faces is how to convey fully the professionalism of the original text into the Chinese version, in order to help its target readers to grasp in precision the knowledge, form and spirit of modern computer science.The purpose of translation in this practice is to spread the knowledge. In performing her translation, the translator utilizes methods such as amplification, omission, inversion and recasting in order to convey the knowledge of computer science as concisely and precisely as the authors do in the original text. In the spirit of scientific professionalism, the author strives to reproduce the content of the source text objectively and accurately for the reader.The translation report consists of six chapters. Chapter one is Task Description,describing the purpose, reason, and source text of this translation practice. Chapter Two is Preparations, generalizing the preparations that have been done beforehand. Chapter Three introduces Translation Process. Chapter Four is Quality Control, mainly concerning proofreading. Chapter Five is Case Study, which is the main body of the report. Chapter Six is Conclusion.
