Local Writing And Modern Imagination In Comparative Horizon

Local has played an important role in meaning-producing system of a given society,and nostalgia memory,as a concept of much tension,has brought about not only the creative impulse to the writers,but also provided with wide poetic space for modern imagination,when the local culture has been involved in the modernization.China and American,both as the greatest country and the only superpower respectively,they all have to deal with the ever-complicating modern problems with the swift globalization on the one hand,but on the other,both countries has also been intermingled together politically,economically and culturally,which has made it necessary that different kinds of dialogues must be established and deepened.Faulkner and Jia Pingwa both as the representative writer of two countries,they are all the typical local writers,but for the difference in the cultural developing periods,there existed the similarity and relevance in the writing of local space as well as the difference in the literary representation and aesthetic revelation,which has resulted from different conception in their attitudes on traditional and modern civilization.This thesis,situated in the history and culture(the process of thought)and by combing through local,nostalgia,the modern swerving of literature as well as the relative theories of modernity,is aimed at the comparative research on the different logical unfolding of the local writing and modern imagination of those two writers,by which the differences and commonness of literary ideas and cultural concepts of western and Chinese history will be further considered;what's more,the different responsive steps and writing landscapes in the process of modernization and the deep reasons and contemporary values at the back of local writing of modern literature will be also excavated.The whole paper will be divided into five pares,inclusive of research background,topic selection,reviewing of past researches,research methods as well as the new finds in the research.The mainstay of the paper could be separated into three parts,the main idea of chapter?is related to the literary practices concerning the local narratives and modern envisioning of those two great writers.From those notions such as an modernity,local and nostalgia,and in the detailed process the construction anddeconstruction of local utopias and modern transformation of traditional culture will be given close analyses.The main idea of chapter ? is based on the analyses of Bakhtinian of local writings of Jia pingwa and Faulkner,by which the differences and possibilities of mutual-compensation will be closely probed into with the help of inter-textual relations of those two writers.Against the background of postmodern context,the main contents of chapter ? are detailed analyses of local representations and writing skills on the one hand,and on the other hand,watch-keeping of local color and reasonable scheme of local modernization will also be proposed.The conclusion of the thesis is that the road of Chinese modernization is different from American road.Just for the deep-seated tradition and later-emerging and exogenous-guided traits of Chinese modernity,the contemporary connotations of local china will be manifested in the communication with foreign culture.As a kind of fictional existence,local culture should not be regarded as an imitation or reproduction of the social and historical development,and local literature,in this case,is a kind of imaginative production in the construction of social life.The local writing,therefore,is both a kind of positive reaction in the process of modernization and a kind of textual unfolding of given ideology,and the different discourses from those two writers will become a kind of natural symptoms of modernity.Still further,the different symptomatic presentations from different countries will naturally form a kind of general dialogue,which has functioned as a means to be used to explore the possibility of application of American modernity to the road of Chinese modernization.
