In the 1930 s and 1940 s,some Chinese writers traveled to British and used English to write literature.They saw the foreigners as their default readers,told them a real China,and clarified the role that westerners had had for the long-term cognition of fragmented and distorted China.It confirms that the cultural elites going overseas how to look back at China through world perspectives and constructing their national imaginations in their literature with foreign lands.In the 1930 s and 1940 s,Chinese writers cherished the enthusiasm of “walking into modernity” and went to the United Kingdom.After truly entering the field of Western culture,they both experienced the collision of Western modern civilization and Chinese traditional culture,and they also felt the humiliation came from the discourse of China.In such impulses,they developed a reflection to express their opinion of entry into an alien space.Their imagination and utterance of China had both reflect the personal life experiences of overseas,and also reflected the feelings of home and country as Chinese nationals under the great times..The English writing and national imagination of Chinese-british writers in the 1930 s and 1940 s represented by S.I.Hsiung,Chiang Yee,Ye Junjian,etc.fully embody their reflection on Chinese traditional culture and the acceptance of Western modern ideas.In their writingpractices,it also reflects a pattern of integration between China and the West.Their English writing shows that the cultural elites who go out of the country think and hope for their own nationalities,and they it was plagued by the complicated factors of the authors' self-talk.Through their diverse writing practices,British readers can piece together a more authentic Chinese appearance.
