In Eileen Chang's novels, there are a lot of texts with exotic features, which has created a series of foreign characters in the concession or colony. These characters, the plots and the spatio-temporal background together constitute the unique literary space in Eileen Chang's novels, which is the "exotic space".The "exotic space" in her novels is a literary space formed by the generalization, abstraction and re-creation of the social exotic customs by the author. In the material world, the literary space has its corresponding objective matrix:Shanghai and Hong Kong, and the source of its inspiration is closely related to the life experience of Eileen Chang herself.Eileen Chang combines the objective characteristics of Shanghai and Hong Kong, the life experiences and subjective expressions of herself together. And through a series of literature processing and transformation,we get the "exotic space".This paper explores her exotic writing from the following three aspects:firstly, from the physiological origin and culture origin angle, analyses her characterization of exotic people;secondly, from the aspect of the narrative theme of family and love,to reproduce the "other" image of the"exotic space" in Eileen Chang's novels;and lastly,to demonstrate the writing attitude of"cross-cultural intermediary" in the process of exotic writing of Eileen Chang by discussing the narrative position of contrast and comparison in her novels. In addition, comparing to the "local space",the "exotic space" is "the other",and the two together constitute the "urban space" in Eileen Chang's novels. And the constitution is a result of mutual penetration and integration instead of a simple superposition. It also reflects the process of conflict and symbiosis between Eastern and Western civilization in Shanghai and Hong Kong.At the same time of forming the "center-periphery" urban spatial pattern,it also constructs some certain "fringe space" with special meaning, which becomes the classical space with unique symbolic significance in Eileen Chang's novels.
