Many world-class universities have their unique and complete university charters that are equivalent to the "Constitutions of the University".In Western countries,the university charter was established with the birth of the medieval university in Europe.At that time,charter was the permission issued by the Pope or King to give the university a certain degree of autonomy.In China,there are lots of scholars and translators studying the E-C translation of university's charter for introducing foreign universities' advanced management system in order to standardize the management system and operation mechanism of higher education in China.In recent years,it is an indisputable fact that China's higher education is developing towards globalization in the process of economic globalization.China's university has made rapid advances in strengthening its cooperation with overseas universities.International exchange is becoming more and more frequent through Sino-foreign cooperative education projects.Under the circumstance,charters of Chinese universities that involve the introduction of their development course,their characteristics and the specific regulations of the internal affairs,which were frequently needed to be added as a supplementary agreement in the formal cooperation agreement.Thus,the English version of Chinese university's charter have already acted as an important intermediary to explain the unique campus culture and operation mechanism of Chinese universities to universities in other countries.Given that the research on the C-E translation of University Charter is relatively scarce and its significance,the author decides to do research in this field.Through the systematic study of text typology and two representative theorists——Reiss' s and Newmark's view,the author finds that their views differ in the type division of the legal text and applicable translation strategies.This report creatively divides ST into prescriptive passages and descriptive passages according to the feature of the original text.And then,some feasible translation methods were given in accordance with“form-oriented” prescriptive passages and “content-oriented” descriptive passages.Exemplified by encountered problems in the task from the textual,syntactical and lexical perspective,the report highlights the analysis of challenges and solutions in the C-E translation of university's charter.At the syntactical level,there are difficulties in the translation of Chinese run-on sentences and non-subject sentences.At the lexical level,the main problem is the translation of Chinese four-character phrases.The author put forwardslots of translation methods,such as addition,converting active voice to passive voice,translating verbs into nous or pronouns,and etc.,which may be instructive when dealing with the C-E translation of university's charter in the future.
