A Domesticating Approach To Translating Chinese Four-character Phrases And Run-on Sentences

This is a report on translating city promotion materials of the 2nd Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation(abbreviated as the Guangzhou Award) during a seven-month internship at the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou Municipal Government, from May to November 2014. During the internship, the writer has translated over 50,000 words of city promotion materials, including city manuals & brochures, speeches, and letters. Hereby the writer chose over 10,000 words of the source text to finish this translation report.A majority of the writer’s translation falls into city manuals and brochures, which aim at introducing Guangzhou and promoting its latest achievements in urban innovation to ordinary readers from English-speaking countries and regions. The translation should provide them with adequate information in a limited time of reading, and help them understand the cycle events(forums, seminars, exhibitions, etc.) of the 2nd Guangzhou Award. Therefore, the writer adopts domestication in her translation practice, and this report addresses the translation of Chinese four-character phrases and run-on sentences. With the application of domestication, the writer adopts multiple translation techniques, including omission, combination and sentence restructuring. In this way, the translation is intelligible for the target reader, which helps promote Guangzhou and facilitate its exchanges with cities worldwide.
