The rapid development of science and technology has contributed to the emergence of a considerable number of neologisms.in English for science and technology(EST).The creation and use of these sci-tech neologisms is of great significance for international exchanges and scientific progress,and the scientific English neologisms have been an important project in linguistic research and in translation studies.However,it seems that few studies have been concentrated on the English-Chinese translation of scientific and technological compound neologisms.As one of the most productive means of word formation,compounding endows new words with tenacious vitality in a flexible way,of which the E/C translation is a necessary issue in the research of sci-tech neologisms in EST.The present thesis mainly explores the formation and E/C translation of compound neologisms in EST based on the similarities and differences between English and Chinese compounds,so as to produce an accurate,idiomatic,concise and appropriate Chinese rendition.The sample of compound neologisms involved have been selected from the published research articles in Nature which is widely recognized as a top international academic journal.According to their construction,these compound neologisms mainly fall into 9 subgroups:noun + noun,noun + 'verb',verb + noun,noun + present participle,past participle + noun,adjective + present participle,adverb + present participle,numeral +noun and adjective + noun.Considering that both English and Chinese compounds can be interpreted as a certain kind of syntactic relations,such as Subject-Predicate Relation,Verb-Object Relation,Adverbial-Head Relation,Attribute-Head Relation and Coordinative Relation,the author has divided these English compound neologisms into 20 combinations with regard to their syntactic relations,construction and word order.In the same way,Chinese compounds have also been classified into 15 combinations.Then,a contrastive analysis of English compound neologisms and Chinese compounds has been conducted.The results indicate that 10 of the 20 combinations of sci-tech English compound neologisms are in full correspondence with Chinese compounds in terms of construction,syntactic relations and word order,and the other 10 English compound combinations share some similarities with Chinese compounds in terms of syntactic relations on the one hand,but differ from Chinese compounds in that there has been a lack of inverted word order and abbreviations in Chinese compounds,which can be regarded as partial correspondence.In this case,the E/C translation of sci-tech compound neologisms should be dealt with properly based on these correspondent relationships.For full correspondence,word-for-word translation is adopted;while for partial correspondence,inversion,partial translation and zero translation are used based on the subtle differences in construction and word order.These translation methods are basically consistent with the inter-lingual transfer theory of full correspondence,partial correspondence and zero correspondence put forward by Liu Miqing.These research findings will make a contribution to the studies on the contrastive analysis of English and Chinese compound words,as well as the translation theory and practice of scientific English.The deficiencies of this thesis require further research.
