This translation report is excerpted from the first two chapters of Divisions &Integrations:The Expansion of Global Capitalism(hereinafter referred to as Divisions &Integrations)written by professor Wang Yong and Sangeeta Parashar,which is a textbook for students and mainly discusses divisions and integrations in economic,social,environmental,cultural,and political aspects under the background of global capitalism.The first chapter is an overview of the whole book,which helps people comprehend the real meaning of divisions and integrations—the expansion of global capitalism.The second chapter discusses economic inequality measurements and trends,which includes gross national income(GNI),gross domestic product(GDP),GDP at purchasing power parity(PPP),Gini index,human development index(HDI)and the democracy index and so on.The original text belongs to sociology with many sociological and economic terminologies and sentence patterns.Its language is formal and concise.Thus,the adequacy and acceptability are chosen as the basic translation norms.The adequacy of translation is discussed from the perspective of terms and long sentences.To convey terminological adequacy,the translator adopts literal and explanation translation methods;to express adequacy of long sentences,the translator uses linear translation and division translation methods to satisfy the unification of adequacy and acceptability.The acceptability of translation is analyzed from the perspective of words and stylistic features.In terms of lexical acceptability,the translator uses amplification,omission and conversion translation methods;to convey stylistic acceptability,the translator adopts rearranging structure translation methods to ensure cultural facsimile.Through this translation practice,the translator has a far better understanding of the adequacy and acceptability.Only the translator consider the adequacy and acceptability at the same time,the translation work can convey the complete information of the original text and be accepted by target readers.
