This report is based on English–Chinese translation practice of the book Divisions and Integrations: the Expansion of Global Capitalism by Wang Yong and Parashar Sangeeta,published by Kendall Hunt Publishing Press on August 29,2014.The Excerpt Chapter 7-The Commodification of Basic Needs: Water,Food and the Environment is selected as the translation practice text,which is related to hot topics in modern society,especially in age of globalization in 21 stcentury.This book has been used as textbook materials for American university students.Thus,it is very important to study on this sociological text.This chapter is to illustrate the performance of the expansion of global capitalism and the future development of capitalist globalization through examples of exploitation and utilization of water resources in India,South America and some Asian countries,food relief and export,industrial and agricultural production integration.Divisions and Integrations: The Expansion of Global Capitalism has clear stylistic features as a sociological text,including a large number of terms,proper nouns,long sentences,complicated structures,which increases the difficulty of translation.Thus,the translator concentrates on two aspects: translation of terminology and translation of complicated sentences.As for terms,the terms are mostly abbreviations and social science professional terms.The paper adopts the strategies of literal translation and transliteration to analyze terms.As for complicated sentences,sentences are mostly compound sentences that are mixed with attributive clauses,adverbial clauses and appositive clauses.In order to confirming to Chinese sentence expressions,the translator uses interlinear translation,splitting translation and recasting translation to divide and reorganize sentences to accurately convey the text information.Although having less experience in translation of this type of text,the translator tries to overcome difficulties in understanding the original text,enrich relevant knowledge,make upfor the shortcomings of translation expressions.The purpose is to make sure that target language readers can understand the translation text.
