The English translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung is an unprecedented translation activity in the Chinese translation history.Its powerful translation team,delicate translation process,and strict quality of translated texts all make Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung a model of Chinese translation studies,which has important research value and significance.However,the research importance of the English translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung has not been fully recognized by many scholars during the past several decades,so papers and works studied on this translation event are quite few.In addition,previous studies on the English translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung are mostly focus on the summary of translation experience,translation examples and translation skills,while studies on the English translation history of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung are hard to find.Translation history is an important part of translation,occupying an essential area in translation studies.By reviewing translation history,translation researchers can not only obtain first-hand information and clear the development of translation studies and translation practice,but also can summarize translation experience and promote the development of translation studies.Therefore,this thesis will firstly focus on the historical facts of the English translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung in order to restore the full history picture of this activity.Then,this thesis will carry out a thorough analysis of the translation activity in the light of Pym's translation history theory,trying to analyze the cause of the activity in the current social,political and cultural background;to make clear the political and social characteristics of this event;and to summarize the inherent law of the event.It aims at making active attempts to the study of translation history of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung.The whole thesis contains five parts in all:The first part is the introduction,which will briefly discuss the backgrounds,contents,methodology and significance of the research.The second part is the literature review.The author will review the previous translation research conditions of the English translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung at home and abroad,and try to make some relevant commentaries about it.The third part is the theoretical framework.The author will firstly make an overview to translation history.Then the author will focus on the study of translation history with the theory of Pym,in order to establish the theoretical framework for this thesis.The fourth part is the main body of this thesis.In this chapter,the author will carry out the study in the light of Pym's theory,explaining this translation event from these three perspectives: translation archaeology,historical criticism,explanation,in order to deepen the understanding of the research.The fifth part of the thesis is the conclusion,which will sum up the shortcomings of this paper and point out its originalities and future research prospects.The value of this thesis consists in the following three aspects.Firstly,as the study of the translation history is still in the development stage,this topic is comparatively novel and challenging.Secondly,as the study of translation history takes the interdisciplinary approach as its basic characteristics,so a number of perspectives such as history,sociology and cultural research will be used in the study,which are good for the construction of this discipline.Finally,in the study of the English translation history of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung,we are not only able to deal with the collection and screening of historical data,but also to clarify the cultural and political relations behind translation activities.
