A Report On E-C Translation Of International Construction Contract In Light Of Newmark’s Text Type Theory

This report is intended to reflect and summarize the completion process of the English translation project of a construction contract under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory.The original text of the contract is signed by a construction engineering company of China and a foreign government.The text has the general characteristics of science and technology,the legal text and the economic and trade text.The terms are professional,accurate,concise and many modal verbs are used.Passive voice sentences and complex long sentences are frequently used.This report focuses on the guidance of the Newmark’s text-type translation theory on the E-C translation of engineering contract in international business contracts.Newmark’s text type theory divides texts into three categories:expressive text,informative text and vocative text according to different text functions,and Newmark puts forward semantic translation and communicative translation.The author first analyzed the textual features of the original text from three aspects-science and technology,legal texts and economic and trade texts,and analyzed the differences between Chinese and English contracts.Under the guidance of the Newmark text type theory,the translation strategy based on communicative translation is determined.The translation is in accordance with the target language style on the basis of the accuracy of the source text.The report also focuses on the specific English-Chinese language transferring process.The author compared the differences between English and Chinese business contract language in terms of words and sentences and adopted specific translation skills,such as literal translation and omission translation,etc.,to achieve the goal of accurate transmission of the original information and achieve target-language-oriented translation.The report consists of the following five parts:The first part mainly includes project introduction,project requirements and report structure;The second part briefly outlines the translation process and the overview of the translation studies related to the text of the business contract.The third part mainly states Newmark’s text type theory and analyzes the textual characteristics of the Chinese and English business contract texts.The fourth part lists the typical cases from the perspectives of vocabulary and sentence patterns,and fully shows how the translator used a variety of translation techniques flexibly.The fifth part summarizes the guidance function of Newmark’s translation theory on the text of business contract,the experience gained in the process of translation and the existing problems.
