This translation report is based on two international distribution contracts that translated by the author during his internship.They were signed between the author’s company and two home-textile companies in Netherlands and Spain,which stipulated the rights,obligations and risks of both parties in transnational business.Nowadays,international business exchange becomes more frequent,and business contract translation accordingly has a larger market.The quality of international distribution contract translation has a direct influence over the economic interests of both parties within the contract.A company may suffer economic loss and even lawsuits for just a minimum translation mistake which causes misunderstanding.Therefore,a successful translation of international distribution contract will exert positive effects for companies to formulate cautious business strategies and expand their overseas market.Meanwhile,it can also help companies to attract foreign investment and promote technology exchanges,sharpening competitiveness in the international market.Contract is the target readers-oriented text,with strong legality and professionalism,requiring the translators to use the words and phrases that are in compliance with laws.In order to clearly and objectively deliver the contract content to the readers,the author chooses the Skopos Theory to analyze the source text.On the basis of Skopos theory and its three rules,the author makes a study and concludes some experiences on the translation strategies and technics from the lexical level,syntactical level and textual level,including the translation of archaic words,terminologies,the processing of modal verbs,passive sentences,adverbial clauses,attributive clauses and the adjustment of textual cohesion.Through this translation practice,the author finds that for contract translation,the translator must be with rich professional knowledge and at the same time use the right theory to guide his translation.In the process of translation,the translator should always be clear about the purpose of translation,so that the translation can be objective,rigorous,coherent and smooth,accurately delivering the contract information.The author hopes that his research will contribute experiences and inspirations for the translation of contract texts,and arouse more scholars’ interests in such translation. |
