Environmental reports,as an important part of news reports, are closely linked to our daily life.More and more people regard air quality status as reference standard of consumption, investment and travel.Since the year of 2013,reports on air pollution in news media have also occupied an increasingly important position as China has been experiencing some hazy weather in a wide range of areas.Nida's "functional equivalence" theory is of great guiding significance to the translation practice. The theory emphasizes on "functional equivalence" between two languages, rather than word-by-word translation. It can help achieve the target of conveying the information of the air pollution news to the targeted readers. In this paper, the author, with the guidance of Nida's "functional equivalence"theory, discusses the E-C translation of air pollution news of China in The Guardian.Firstly, purposes and significance of this report are briefly introduced, reflecting the necessity of studying the Chinese translation of air pollution news in The Guardian.Secondly, preparation of the translation--task process description, texts analysis, and searching for parallel text of air pollution news both in English and Chinese, will further deepen the understanding of this kind of news and help the author to choose proper translation theory and methods.Thirdly, the author introduces Nida's"functional equivalence" theory and its development, and discusses the feasibility of it to guide the translation of air pollution news.Fourthly, with examples, the author, from the lexical level, the syntax level, the discourse level, respectively analyses how to achieve functional equivalence and realize the effect that source text(ST)readers and target text(TT)readers have almost the same feelings.
