A Smile of Fortune is one of the short stories of Joseph Conrad’s novels based on Southeast Asian background,and it is a part of the national Social Science Project "A Study of Joseph Conrad’s fictions with Southeast Asian Background".The translator’s translation is a complementary part of the materials needed to be translated,which facilitates the use,research and exchange of them.This Project will consult the translation of the translator and will show in the final results.This report is intended to describe,analyze and conclude the whole translation practice based on the translation of the first four chapters of A Smile of Fortune.Six major parts constitutes this reports,which are introduction,project description,process analyzing,aesthetic representation,case study and conclusion.Three types of major problems occurring during the translation,which are the rewriting of long and complex sentences,coherence of the discourse,and cultural differences,will be discussed in depth.After this,the translator will conclude the techniques applied in the process of translation,and give examples how those techniques help to cope with the problems mentioned above.As a convention,the translator will point out the problems and limitations remained in the final version.Besides,the translator hope that this report will be in value of novel translation,especially be helpful when translating Conrad’s novels based on a Southeast Asian background.
