What is translation: professional translation is the work of Japanese translator Yoichi Yamaoka. It aims to let translation learners realize what translation is,the knowledge related to translation and how to grow into professional translation. This book focuses on what translation is,and introduces translation related content from different aspects. It was published in 2001,which can be said to be a representative work of translation books at the beginning of the 21 st century. It has a high learning reference value for translation learners.Starting from the introduction of the theme "what is translation",this paper introduces the history of translators, translation related skills, translation market, translation learning and translation education in turn, and finally analyzes and discusses the theme of translation from various aspects. So,the book is also well received in Japan. The reason for choosing this book is that, with the deepening of reform and opening up and the increasing frequency of international exchanges, translation plays an increasingly important role in China's politics, economy, diplomacy, culture, education, science and technology, and the need for high-quality translators is growing. As a graduate student majoring in Japanese translation, after more than two years of training in professional knowledge and related translation practice,I feel that my understanding of the concept of "translation" is insufficient, and there is still a certain gap in becoming a translator.I hope that through the introduction of Japanese original books,I can further understand the relevant contents and understand different aspects of translation to give guidance to a certain extent can better carry out translation activities in the future. In addition, when introducing translation related knowledge, the book takes English translation day as an example to explain, which is the content that has not been touched and dabbled in in daily learning. At the same time, taking this as a reference,it compares with Chinese and Japanese translation, finds and grasps the similarities and differences between them, and plays a positive role in translation activities. In this book, six chapters are used to explain the relevant contents of translation.Due to the large amount of information,it is impossible to complete the translation of all parts in a short time. Therefore, the author chooses the third chapter, which is the most concerned chapter,as the original text of translation, with more than 20000 words of translation. The content of the third chapter is "translation skills".Translation technology is the most basic content in translation activities. How to use it skillfully is a problem that translators must think about.Through this translation practice,I hope to understand the author's point of view through Chinese translation, and learn the skills from the perspective of translation learners to make up for my own shortcomings. In addition,in the process of translation practice, theory and strategy are also indispensable. In this translation activity, the author chooses equivalence(Nida and Newmark)and purpose(Vermeer)translation theories as theoretical guidance, and combines relevant translation strategies(free translation, additional translation, etc.),on the basis of grasping the characteristics of the original text, analyzes and studies translation examples from the aspects of lexical phrases, long sentences and cultural differences.Through this translation practice, the author draws the following conclusions.First, analyze the specific problems and adopt different translation theories and strategies according to different contents.Only by applying scientific translation theory can we convey what the original author really wants to express.Secondly, before carrying out translation activities,we need to do a good job of preparation, understand the characteristics of the translated text and relevant background information,so as to achieve twice the result with half the effort. Finally,in the future study,we should constantly improve our Japanese reading ability and Chinese expression ability, read more related books, improve our ability of language expression, and constantly improve our translation practice ability.
