The ongoing development of social networks and the putting forward of the strategy of “Internet Plus” on a nation-wide scale help news buzzwords prevail and become an important component in the daily life of all netizens.Features of Chinese news buzzwords such as popularity, originality, richness, interactiveness and interestingness endow the translation of them with great value and significance for cross-cultural communication and for the “going out” of Chinese culture. In this regard, the author of this thesis tries to find out a new theoretical perspective and translation principles for the translation of news buzzwords to better study this subject.Manipulation theory believes that translation activities are manipulated by three major factors—ideology, poetics and patronage, whereas translation axiology holds that translation is an equal transfer of linguistic values and the translator's task is to analyze different value factors in the source text and transfer them into the target text without any reservation. These value factors are political value, economic value, cultural value and aesthetic value. The author maintains that the manipulative factors of ideology, poetics and patronage in André Lefevere's manipulation theory embody different value factors like political value, economic value, cultural value and aesthetic value in translation axiology.Since some news buzzwords themselves are politically, economically, culturally and aesthetically valued,it is feasible to conduct a study on value orientations of news buzzwords under the guidance of manipulation theory combined with translation axiology.China Daily is an official newspaper of the Chinese government and the weekly buzzwords listed on its website of language tips are highly attractive, readable, valuable and vogue. Therefore, this study chooses news buzzwords on this website as source of research materials and discusses the value orientations during translation in the perspective of manipulation theory and translation axiology with the hope to provide some references for the solutions to similar translation problems. After analyzing news buzzwords selected in this thesis, the author discovers that the translation of different types of news buzzwords with their distinctive features is driven by one or several value factors. When translating those buzzwords which explain political or other systems with Chinese characteristics such as political buzzwords or buzzwords elaborating on official documents or regulations, the translator is more driven by political value. When translating those eye-attracting buzzwords which serve as great language capital such as some economic, recreational, and Internet buzzwords,or buzzwords concerning people's livelihood, the translator is more driven by economic value. When translating those buzzwords the connotations of which can only be understood in very native target-language expressions such as some Chinese proverb buzzwords,or some social buzzwords with distinctive features of the Chinese language, the translator is more driven by aesthetic value. When translating those buzzwords which display our fine cultural traditions or modern Chinese culture such as cultural buzzwords or some Internet buzzwords showing our positive modern culture, the translator is more easily driven by cultural value. When translating those news buzzwords which contain more than one value factor, the translator is more likely to be driven by multiple values. Therefore, this thesis concludes that the translator should actively abide by the following principles when translating news buzzwords—to attain the political value of the source text,to realize the economic value of the source text,to achieve the cultural value of the source text,to reproduce the aesthetic value of the source text and to acquire the multiple values of the source text.
