A Research Of News Translation From The Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

Nowadays,the exchange of information between countries is more frequent than before.In the process,news translation plays an important role.News spreads from one country to another by means of translation.In the process of news translation,translators or journalists have to take social,governmental,poetic,and some other elements into account.And these elements can be included in Belgian scholar Andre Lefevere's Manipulation Theory.Andre Lefevere is one of the representatives of translation studies,which was founded by James S.Holmes,with the aim of setting up a comprehensive theory to guide the production of translation.Manipulation Theory can influence news translation process,and there are three elements in it: the first one is ideological factor,which has a dominant role in translation process.The second one is poetic aspect,which influences writing style of translators.The last one is patronage,which is enforced by patrons.And these tree elements take some factors which are outside of the sphere of translation into consideration,for example,political,ideological,economic,and cultural background.This thesis aims at having a deeper research on news translation from a concrete theory—Manipulation Theory and analyses news texts from CNN and Global Times.The news chosen from CNN and Global Times are the latest ones.Compared with other countries' research of manipulation theory,many Chinese researches on Manipulation Theory are mostly on concrete novels.This thesis finds that elements of Manipulation Theory do have an influence on news translation.There are five chapters in this thesis:The first chapter presents background,significance,methodology as well as structure of the thesis.The second chapter presents literature review of Manipulation Theory and news translation.The third chapter illustrates Manipulation Theory,which is a theoretical framework of the thesis,including the origin of Manipulation Theory,and elements of it,and the way these elements influence news translation.The fourth chapter does a comparative analysis of texts from CNN and Global Times and have a detailed study of news translation from three aspects of Manipulation Theory—ideology,poetics and patronage.The fifth chapter gives a conclusion of the research,including findings and limitations: the findings show that elements of Manipulation Theory do have an influence on news translation process.The limitations illustrate that such aspects as readers' response,the detailed effect of the combination of tree elements of Manipulation Theory,the role of journalists,are not involved in the thesis.Through an analysis of news texts from CNN and Global Times,the dissertation finds that the three elements of Manipulation Theory can affect news translation process.Ideology,which may originate from political party and then influence news agencies,and journalists,can affect translation of news titles and content.Poetics will influence the process through its grammatical aspects(implicit or explicit)and structural aspect(hypotactic or paratactic,static or dynamic,impersonal or personal,passive or active,focused or scattered).Patronage will impact news translation from its ideological component,economic component and status.Moreover,the research finds the inner relationship between elements of Manipulation Theory—ideology and poetics can affect patronage,and ideology can influence functional component of poetics,which lays foundation of ideology.
