On Chinese To English News Translation From The Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

Translation studies took a “cultural turn” at the end of 20 th century.The Manipulation School put forward that ideology,poetics and patronage are three major factors that exert influence on translation,but previously,the manipulation theory was mainly employed in literary translation studies.With more global communication,Chinese to English(C-E for short)news translation takes on a more important role and various case studies have shown that news translation is also influenced by ideology,patronage and other non-linguistic factors.This thesis employs manipulation theory as the framework to dig into the factors that impinge on C-E news translation.On the basis of literature review on manipulation theory and news translation,this thesis goes on to examine the definition,features and reception of C-E news translation in this digital era.By analyzing a variety of C-E news translation examples from authoritative newspapers and journals at home and abroad,and insights drawn from field researches and interviews with veteran reporters in several large media outlets,this thesis takes a close look at the three influential factors: ideology,patronage and poetics in C-E news translation respectively.With different ideologies and patrons,Chinese and western media are under different restraints in news translation.On the one hand,Chinese translators need to be highly politically correct in translating sensitive phrases;on the other hand,they need to balance actively exporting Chinese culture and catering to target readers' ideology and taste through rewriting.In the end,the study summarizes corresponding rewriting tactics under the restraints of manipulation and puts forward requirements on translators' competence for news translation in an attempt to facilitate news translation studies and improve C-E news translation.
