The frequent use of the passive voice has been associated with the objectivity in English scientific discourse. Translation of passive verbs is challenging since they require more changes to be transferred to the new language. According to functional equivalence theory, translation should be done by considering the function of a text in the two languages. This paper investigates the strategies and approaches that translators can adopt in translation of these passive verbs from English into Chinese by detailed analysis of the examples taken from the fourth chapter of The Ocean Engineering Handbook. The author suggests that English passive voice in scientific discourse can be respectively translated into Chinese active sentence, passive sentence, judgment sentence or sentence with no subject according to the functions the text realize. The findings in this paper are of significance for translation instruction and teaching.
