A Study On EST Chinese Translation From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

As the national core-competitiveness,technological productivity plays a significant role in national economy.The communication and exchange of sci-tech information is indispensable for every nation.The engineering of petroleum involves important fields of geology,well-drilling,substance exploration,petroleum extraction,petroleum reserve and storage and transportation.Therefore,the petroleum engineering and technology plays a crucial part in the whole worldas an important strategic resource.Undoubtedly,the proper and feasible mother tongue version of petroleum engineering is essential for international exchange.Currently,talents of petroleum and well fail to obtain updated information for the inadequacy of professional English ability for petroleum,meanwhile,it is hard for the professional English learners to grasp standard translation methods due to limited knowledge of petroleum.There are still nonstandard English to Chinese versions in the field of petroleum engineering,thus influencing reader's understanding of source language text.As a postgraduate of MTI with great interest in the subject of petroleum,the present writer realizes that functional equivalence theory mainly involves four aspects,lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,paragraph equivalence and stylistic equivalence.In the process of translation practice,the translator should give more consideration to four aspects above to realize content equivalence.It implies that Nida's functional equivalence theory has guidance to English-Chinese petroleum translation version after the systematic research of translating theories.Focusing on the reader's reception and taking petroleum English as an example,this thesiswill analyze features of different petroleum texts from vocabularies,sentences and paragraphs.It is designed to provide translation methods and skills about different text situationsthrough literature analysis and translation examples.Thisthesis summarizes the existing problems and proposes constructive translating suggestions toward the petroleum English-Chinese translationthrough the practical translation process and the results.It is hoped that this thesis could provide suggestive translation methods under the framework of Nida's functional equivalence and render the Chinese translation more suitable and acceptable forpetroleum workers.
