The “Tao” Of New Ceramic Art Of China

To take the author's ceramic creation as an example,thesis research is an essential way for creation and development of modern ceramics.Here the WAY(or Tao for Chinese character “?”,meaning a road or path,and a school of thought – Taoism,to be precise)encompasses not only concepts derived from Taoist aesthetic thoughts but also methodologies for ceramic artists in their creation and practices.At its very beginning,the paper discusses Taoist cultural theory itself,offering a basic explanation of meanings for Tao as well as highlighting the essence of Taoist aesthetic thoughts.Then,with Tao modern ceramics is educed.Here,by focusing on creative thinking on combination of techniques and Tao(meaning nature/truth or rules/laws)and aesthetic application of design with nature,two large paragraphs are used to explain the expression of Tao in modern ceramics,including discussion about how to integrate aesthetic thoughts in Taoism into creative ideas for modern ceramics.After that,the way of design following the Tao is presented through the exploration of Tao – namely,the revelation of Tao's methodologies: unity of heaven & man and harmony between man & nature are philosophies of design;and fundamentals of providence,nature and man are way of ecologization as well as ways of design featuring harmony and coexistence.What come next are understanding,expression and application of Tao by taking the author's ceramic creation as a study case.In this part,the author's inspiration source and concept thinking are completely recorded and experience is summarized in terms of artistic analysis of the creation practice.The concluding part discusses the way of development for modern ceramics to the world through Tao-led design thinking.To feel the life of clay and very origin of nature is to gain insights into Tao and spirits of modern ceramics.To respect nature and follow instincts helps ceramic artists to embody spirits of Chinese nation's traditional culture and the stamp of an era as well as their individuality using Tao.As a result,Tao is made tangible rather than intangible and concrete rather than abstract,achieving great harmony between man and object,man and nature and object and nature as well.It is necessary for the creation of ceramic art to take forms that are in line with contemporary aesthetics.It is even more necessary to achieve constant innovation and renewal as up-to-date innovation is particularly important in a modern society where social division of labor is increasingly refined.As a result,finding proper breakthrough points and trying well-classified applications will eventually realize harmony and coexistence between ceramic art and the world,a maximum value manifestation of ceramics.Such is the way for modern ceramics.
