This is a report on subtitle translation of the documentary We are the Hans. The first three episodes of the documentary are chosen for analysis.Having taken the characteristics of audiovisual subtitle into consideration, the writer aims to discuss the possible problems in the translation process, and put forward relevant translation strategies and solutions. In the description of the translation task, the whole translation process is divided into the stages of pre-translation and translation.Besides, this part makes detailed introduction on the references that are available and the translation theory. The report also explicitly describes the difficulties of the translation task and proposes several steps to guarantee the translation quality. In the next part “case analysis”,the writer focuses on the features of audiovisual subtitle: instantaneousness, synchronization and non-annotation.Through analyzing some typical examples, the writer comes to the conclusion that deduction, adaptation, division and syntactic linearity are effective strategies in the translation task.In addition, the high context feature of Chinese demands that in translating culture-loaded words, the translator should pay much attention to the use of words and adopt the strategies of supplement and adaptation.Based on the description of the translation task and case analysis, such conclusions could be drawn: first, adequate and necessary work of pre-translation exerts a great influence on the translation progress;second, based on the characteristics of audiovisual subtitle, the translator should first analyze the source text carefully and then adopt targeted translation strategy;third,in translating culture-loaded words, the translator should refer to various information channels of authority, take into account the images of such words, and find out the differences between the words and their “equivalent” in the target language.Meanwhile, the translator should compare these “equivalents” and make out their subtle differences.Only by doing so could the translation be faithful to the original text.
