A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of Light And Heavy Vehicle Technology (Excerpt)

As the automobile market continues to expand, the translation of auto texts has been undergoing a blow-out growth. Being a typical kind of technical text, automobile texts have such features as manifold terms and complex sentences. Unfortunately, the translation of auto texts in China is plagued by inaccuracy and incoherence, rendering its quality improvement an urgent need.The author was assigned a task to translate Chapters 27 and 28 in the book of Light and Heavy VehicleTechnology, which was entrusted by a translation company. Based on the original text and the English to Chinese translation of Chapter 27, the author completed this project report.This report mainly discusses the translation of braking system. Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the author elaborates on major issues and difficulties of translation at lexical, sentential and textual level. For example, technical terms can be managed by referring to relevant online resources; Two useful strategies, following the original syntactic order and reinventing sentence structure, will be used to handle the problems in sentences; and cohesive devices and reconstruction of contextual structure can be used to achieve contextual coherence. The author hopes that those translation principles and strategies summarized in this report will be of referential value for technical translation.
