William Somerset Maugham is one of the most important writers of British in the 20th century. In 1919, he came to China and then created two works: On the Chinese Screen and The Painted Veil. In these two works, Maugham depicted the dual image of China. Combined with Maugham's other works,the paper mainly studies the above novel to analyze and interpret the image of China, revealing the author's cultural psychology which is hidden behind the image.This paper is divided into three parts by Comparative Literature of imagologie :chapter one introduces these two works and shows the research at home and abroad.Chapter two combines the theories of imagologie to analyze and interpret the dual image of China in these two works. The two works both entries by self and the others,to summarize reasons of the formation of the dual China image. Last part is a summary of the previous parts, to make the structure clear andexplicate that the China portrayed by Maugham is not a real China, which is a self-created and imagined China. The writer's intention is to confirm his superiority on the one hand, and express his dream of Eutopia on the other hand.
