| The source text of this translation practice is ―Older Adults‖,chapter 11 in Foundations of Behavioral Health.It is an academic book that explores the problem of aging and its policy response in the United States.Actually,the aging trend is increasingly obvious in China,and all sectors of society have attached much importance to this problem.In view of the fact that the aging problem appeared much earlier in the United States than in China,this translation practice can have guiding significance to the aging problem in China.Under the guidance of Xia Tingde’s translation compensation theory,the author analyzes possible and potential translation losses in the process of translation,and then appropriately adopts different compensation strategies.Translation loss occurs at the linguistic and aesthetic level.At the linguistic level,lexical compensation and grammatical compensation are analyzed in this report.To make up for the loss of lexical meaning,the translator can adopt appropriate translation compensation strategies such as amplification,paraphrase,combination,specification,generalization and annotation outside text in translation.Since the source text belongs to the academic text featuring long sentences and passive sentences,division and conversion could be employed to make grammatical compensation.Despite this,at the aesthetic level,it is hard to achieve perfect equivalence of aesthetic form and function in English-Chinese translation.Considering the translation loss at the aesthetic level,the author makes some aesthetic compensation,such as by using different aesthetic form without sacrificing aesthetic function,annotations within text and conveying the faithful meaning by changing the aesthetic form so as to reproduce the aesthetic value in the target text.By analyzing specific translation examples in this report,the author draws the conclusion.When translating academic texts,translators should focus on faithful transmission of the original information,and try to reduce translation loss through the proper use of compensation strategies,in order to make the target text meet target readers’ reading anticipation.The author hopes that this translation report can provide reference materials for the aging problem in China and provide some methods for translating such texts. |
