On The Reproduction Of The Style Of The Source Text

The thesis is a report on the translation of the first five chapters of Metaphors for Love written by a Canadian female writer,Tilya Gallay Helfield.It focuses on how the translator manages to reproduce the style of the source text under the guidance of functional equivalence.Metaphors for Love is a collection of semi-biographic stories,which depicts the life of the people in the Second World War.The charm of this book comes from the author's subtle feelings and her special language style,yet the reproduction of the original style is a formidable task for the translator.So the translator takes up the style translation as the focus of this report,firstly analyzes the style of the source text and finds out stylistic markers from the following three aspects----figures of speech,syntax and register.Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida,the translator tries to come up with some strategies to reserve the style of the original text.Finally,the translator summarized some findings and limitations of this translation practice.The translator focuses on style translation in hope of arousing scholars' interests.She hopes that the strategies will go a long way to help future translators.Meanwhile,this practice has also improved the translator's skills,accumulating some experience for her future translation.
