Nowadays,there is a growing tendency of terrorism,which poses a great threat to the security of the world,and ISIS is clearly one of the most dangerous ones.As a result,the issue of anti-terrorism has attracted much attention of the world.Under such circumstance,the author chooses to translate a briefing paper of which the topic is the military response to ISIS of some countries.This is a translation report on ISIS/Daesh: the military response in Iraq and Syria,a briefing paper written by Claire Mills,Ben Smith,and Louisa Brooke-Holland.A briefing paper which is written for government officials or policy makers outlines a particular issue and its background,making it easier for them to get a quick but thorough understanding of the issue.Therefore,the characteristics of this kind of text requires a lot of techniques in translation.The report briefly introduces the translation and the motivation to have the source text translated.The author makes an analysis of several commonly-used techniques in translation indispensable to the process of translation of this briefing paper.However,the author finds that very often than not,a given problem cannot be solved by these techniques only.Here is a case in point:the translation of the conjunction and.As a commonly-used conjunction,many ands can be found in the source text.As we all know and usually expresses coordinate relation and should be translated as he(?),tong(?),yiji(??),etc.While the author finds in the source text,sometimes and would show other relations between the elements linked by it.In this case,it is inappropriate to simply translate it as he(?).Therefore,special methods are developed to deal with this hard nut.After a careful analysis,this report reveals that when translating the conjunction and,the translator must consider the semantic relation between the elements linked by and.In doing so,the conjunction can be accurately translated.This will help the translator to make the target text more faithful to the source text.It is thus claimed that and can also imply progression,contrast,as well as cause-effect relation.
