This thesis selects a judgment(Birchfield V.North Dakota)issued by the Supreme Court of the United States as the translation subject.Judgment is a kind of legal text. The translation of legal texts aims to express all the information in the source text in an accurate and complete manner so as to achieve the exact equivalence of information between source text and target text,so the translation theory of static equivalence is chosen.Static equivalence requires the equivalence between the source text and target text in terms of deep meaning, facial meaning, language structure, style and format. This thesis, focusing on the task description and case study and guided by the static equivalence, analyzes the application of static equivalence in the translation judgment at the lexical, syntactical and textual level. At lexical level, the translation of legal terms and common words with legal meanings is discussed. At syntactical level,it analyzes how to realize the equivalence of sentences from the aspect of meaning and language structure.Context plays an important role in the equivalence of meaning. The realization of structural equivalence should take into consideration of the equivalence of logic and grammatical structure. At textual level, this thesis holds modeled and stylized language should be considered. To achieve the equivalence of style in the whole text, the target text should be as solemn as the source text and keep the consistency of terms.By doing so,the author hopefully finds the problems in the process of translation, and provides certain guidance for the translation of judicial texts by seeking the solutions guided by the translation theory and learned knowledge about law so as to promote the exchange of judicial ideas between China and western countries...
