A Study On Redundancy In Press Conference Interpreting From The Perspective Of Information Theory

As a medium for the Chinese government to promote exchange with foreign countries,press conference interpreting has always attracted much attention from peoples both at home and abroad.Interpreters are required to convey spokesmen's information accurately in a limited time.Since redundancy is an essential attribute of language,it brings certain difficulties to the successful interpreting of interpreter.Information Theory is the first theory to put forward the concept of redundancy,and it has been widely used in the study of translation.As interpreting is a particular form of translation,the application of Information Theory is bound to bring reference and enlightenment to the research of interpretation.On the basis of Information Theory,the author tries to analyze the redundancy occurred both in source text and the target interpretation in the process of press conference interpreting.The purpose of the thesis is to help the audience better understand the information conveyed by the speaker,ensuring the information can be accurately transmitted and a better communication can be achieved.Based on Premier Li Keqiang's press conferences from 2013 to 2016,the author carries out the analyses from the perspective of Information Theory and sums up the redundancy that frequently occurred in the press conference interpreting,including lexical redundancy,structural redundancy;semantic redundancy and cultural or context redundancy.After the detailed analysis,the author summarizes some strategies that can be applied in the handling of redundancy.i.e.omission,addition as well as paraphrase.This thesis aims to provide some reference and guidance for dealing with the redundancy in interpreting.
