Nowadays with China’s increasingly important international status, the numbers ofcontacts and exchanges with the outside world boost greatly. Under this context, thepress conference serves as an official way to bridge the gap between home and abroad. In China, the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s PoliticalConsultative Conference (CPPCC) sessions are held annually. And the interpretation atthe above-mentioned conferences represents the highest level in China, which calls formore attention and researches. Moreover, the quotation of Chinese culture-loadedexpressions by Premier Wen Jiabao at the press conference is also an interestingphenomenon emerged in recent years. Those expressions usually bear rich culturalconnotations, and owing to the tense atmosphere of press conference and time limitation, the interpretation of such expressions always pose great challenges to interpreters. Thisforms the starting point of the thesis. This thesis mainly focuses on the interpreting strategies of culture-loadedexpressions at press conference from the perspective of interpretive theory. Theinterpretive theory was put forward by Paris School which was represented bySeleskovitch and Lederer. The essential concept of the theory is to grasp the senseexpressed by the addressor instead of the original language form; and the central task ofinterpreter is to deverbalize the outer skin of the original language with the participationof cognitive complements and convey the sense accurately to the target audience. The research method adopted in this thesis is a qualitative study based on datacollected from Premier Wen Jiabao’s speech at the press conference after the conclusionof the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s PoliticalConsultative Conference (CPPCC) sessions from2008to2012.This thesis begins with an introduction to the status quo of the research; then thetheoretical framework of the thesis–the interpretive theory is introduced. In accordancewith the theory and on the basis of previous relevant studies, the thesis sums up thefeatures of press conference interpreting and culture-loaded expressions interpreting;and thus further improve the criteria for press conference interpreting and qualifications of press conference interpreters. Afterwards, the thesis summarizes six majorinterpreting strategies that are most often adopted at press conference in coping with theinterpreting of Chinese culture-loaded expressions with the approach of InterpretiveTheory. They are literal interpreting, explanatory interpreting, contextual interpreting, free interpreting, syntactical transformation and logical relationship processing. As a conclusion, it might be a meaningful attempt to explore the differentinterpreting strategies of culture-loaded expressions at press conference from theperspective of Interpretive Theory. The strategies summarized in this thesis may ofsome value for the interpreters in their future interpreting practices.
