Strategies In Press Conference Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting: An Interpretive Approach

With the deepening of globalization and China’s rapid economic development, Chinahas been playing an increasingly important role in regional and international affairs. Pressconferences held by the Chinese government have thus become not only an effective toolto build up the country’s international image but also a window for the rest of the world toget a better understanding of China and its people. Press conference interpreting thatboasts both a high standard and quality has also opened a new field and provided valuablematerials for interpreting research.This thesis has applied the interpretive theory to analyzing coping strategies in pressconference interpreting. By a careful study of examples taken from Premier Li Keqiang’s2013and2014press conferences, the author has found six strategies prove especiallyuseful in such interpreting, namely proper handling of long sentences, informationamplification and message integration, reconstruction of syntax, flexible rendering ofChinese idioms, avoiding Chinglish, and logic clarification in re-expression stage.
