China Dolls is the ninth novel created by the famous Chinese American woman writer??Lisa See(1955??),which has ranked the top of the New York Times bestsellers for seven weeks after its release in 2014 in America. She employs polyphonic narrative, which is different from monologic narrative, presenting three dancers? pursuit for subjectivity and independent consciousness, and the conflicts and fusions among Chinese,American and Japanese cultures. At the same time, polyphonic features make the novel full of artistic beauty and greatly manifest its creative meaning. This thesis aims at exploring the polyphonic features on the basis of Bakhtin?s polyphony theory.Firstly, the thesis explores that the main characters in the novel obtain their subjectivity and identity through their different voices. And then it analyzes the dialogism in the novel, including the great dialogue and microdialogue. The great dialogue embodies in the contrapuntal relationship of the characters, the plots and the structure, while the microdialogue is reflected in the characters? monologue and double-voiced conversation. Finally,it explores the cultural polyphony.Three kinds of cultures are independent of each other and interlace with each other, which forms the rhythm of polyphony. The cultural conflicts and fusion are revealed in the dialogic form. The novel not only shows the subjectivity and dialogism in structure, but also displays the characteristics of the Chinese American novel?s prominent features in content,i.e.cultural polyphony. The three major polyphonic features show the narrative features of the novel,in addition to the complex emotional entanglements and strong cultural conflict.
