The material I translated is from the novel China Dolls. This project was not cooperated with any companies or organizations. China Dolls describes that three Chinese-American girls’ story in the Nightclub in Chinatown in nineteen-thirties or nineteen-forties, they helped with each other and huddled together to overcome difficulties. And then the Attack on Pearl Harbor promoted the development of the plot. This translation report can be divided into four parts besides the original in English and the translation in Chinese. The first part is an introduction of the translation task, which mainly includes the source of the task, an introduction of the author as well as the novel. The second part is the translation process that elaborates the whole translation process in three stages, which are the first sketch, the second sketch and the final sketch. The third part is the case analysis, in which I analyze the difficulties encountered during the process of translation from the lexical and syntactic level on the basis of Nida’s functional equivalence translation theory, and this part is the main part of this report. The fourth part is the conclusion, which includes experience from the translation process and cognition on the literary translation and contrast between English and Chinese.Through this translation practice, the translator deeply realizes that translation is not the sheer equivalent shift of words and sentences between two languages, it is quite a complicated work. During the translation process, translator could encounter different ways of expressions and conventional cultures between two different languages, so the translator should not only master the two languages skillfully, but also improve our literature cultivation and the understanding of the two different cultures, thus translators can perform well in transformation between two languages.
