Report On Translation Of English Business Agreements From The Perspective Of Functionalist Translation Theory

Since,English business agreements are characterized with formal,accurate and rigorous expressions of words,a frequent use of lengthy and complex sentences as well as passive voice,the Chinese versions of English business agreements demand the translator,on the one hand,to present the contents of the source texts faithfully and accurately,and on the other hand,to produce the target texts with normative words,rigorous logic,formal expressions and objectivity,so as to guarantee the readability and acceptability of the target texts.Functionalist translation theory,with the text types and translation purposes of the translated texts as the focus,encourages the translator to flexibly apply the translation methods so that the maximum communicative functions of the target texts could be achieved.During the translation process,the author,guided by the text typology theory and translation skopos of functionalist translation theory,analyzes how to translate English business agreements and employ translation strategies to handle the difficult points during the translation.The translation report,on the basis of two complete English business agreements,namely “Real Estate Purchase And Sale Agreement”,“Company Agreement of Sunshine Development,LLC.”,explores the guiding significance of functionalist translation theory in translating English business agreements into Chinese ones from the aspect of lexicon,syntax and grammar,which means in order to maximize the communicative functions of the target texts the translator must accord with the characteristics of English business agreements to adopt various translation methods.Specifically,in light of the lexical level,literal translation,free translation,omission and addition have been employed.To deal with the syntactic level,the author has adopted the translation skills,such as division,conversion and inversion.As for the grammatical aspect,the main method is change of voices to tackle the sentences with passive voice.On account of the difficult points and the corresponding strategies,the report aims to summarize the translation methods and skills of translating English business agreements into Chinese ones and provide some references for those who will be engaged in the same text type in the near future.
