Based on the translation practice of Manual of Safety Management(Chapter one and two),the translation report records the whole process of this translation process guided by functionalist translation theory, and concludes with the experiences out of this project as well as difficulties and problems to be solved.A safety manual is rigorous in diction and terminology and prefers the use of long and complex sentences. The translator shall,on the basis of complying with the information of the source text, represent the target text with normative diction and syntax and expression habit that are cohesive with the language context of the target reader so as to ensure the readability and acceptability of the target text to the target reader. This report analyzes the instructive significance of functionalist translation theory on the Chinese translation of English safety manuals.Under the principle of communicative function, the translator utilizes various translation methods that fit this text features. On lexical level, the translator adopts amplification, deletion and conversion;on syntactic level, inversion and division;for sentences with elusive meanings, paraphrase translation is employed.
