The objective of this study is Thoreau’s idea of nature by an application of the theories of Longinus,Burke and Kant on sublime. Our purpose is to widen the study on Thoreau’s later period works,to present a different nature style which is frightened and horrific with Walden’s nature, and to enrich the present study on Thoreau by the view of sublime. We come up with two different natures. One is inner-nature and another is outer-nature.By the analysis of Thoreau’s idea of nature,we find that the sublime in his works has two reasons: one is horror and another is overcoming the horror, and they go forward one by one.The horror has two aspects: one is to outer-nature and another is to inner-nature,as well as overcoming the horror. In fact, the horror is looking up at the nature for its uncontrollable and our human’s deficient.Overcoming the horror is look down the nature for our human’s transcendence and sublimation by surpassing both the inner-nature and outer-nature.
