The report is based on the extracted translation of Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning.This book was written by Peter Crown,Henry L.Roediger III and Mark A.McDanie.They present us a first-hand story about people who have achieved mastery of complex knowledge and skills.In this book,the authors place great emphasis on the story of a series of learners,and illustrate their arguments about how effective learning takes place.Based on the theory of functional equivalence in Nida,this paper reviewed that translation strategies of scientific and technical texts in the light of translation practice.In the form of translation practice this paper report on Make It Stick.The author is faced with certain problems---vocabulary,sentence structure and discourse.Most typical problems have been solved through the analysis of the content,purpose and characteristics of the text.The findings of this report are as below: First of all,in translating popular science books,the translator should try to achieve the equivalence of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.As for lexical equivalence,contextual and mediating strategies help the translator to identify and provide additional meaning.As for syntactic equivalence,nominalization and sentences order shall take different translation methods to deal with.As for textual equivalence,the style and coherence is the focus of translation.Moreover,Nida's functional equivalence theory helped the translation at three levels.Firstly,to realize lexical equivalence,contextual and mediating strategies are helpful to the compensation of its appropriate meaning in translation.To realize syntactic equivalence,two phenomena---nominalization and sentences sequence are needed to be dealt with.Secondly,the functional equivalence theory offers certain freedom and flexibility for the translators in translation.Thirdly,the practicability of functional equivalence theory in the translation of science and technology texts.Nida's functional equivalence theory demands text representation.In addition,Chinese and English belong to different language families,and there is a great difference in language use.It is difficult to achieve complete equivalence.Based on Nida's functional equivalence theory,this paper studies the translation practice of Make It Stick,probes into the translation strategies of popular science texts,and promotes the transmission and smooth expression of popular science information.
