The report is based on the translation of Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning(Excerpts),a popular science book. The book is co-authored by Peter C.Brown,Henry L.Roediger III and Mark A.McDaniel.They convert the latest findings about learning and memory in empirical researches into popular science writing and point out right ways of mastering complex knowledge and skills. It is valuable to introduce the most advanced skills in learning and memory for Chinese readers. The translation of Make It Stick is conducted by two translators, and the author of this report is responsible for the first two chapters. The author analyzes the text type of the book on the basis of Peter Newmark's typology. It turns out that popular science book belongs to informative text, but expressive and vocative texts also exist in the book.According to the communicative and semantic translation theory proposed by Newmark, communicative translation shall be the major translation approach for this book, while semantic translation will be used less frequently. In Chapter Four, the author attempts to find out solutions to the three main problems she encountered: the translation of the title, parentheses and long sentences.Firstly, the titles of popular science books belong to the category of vocative text.Communicative translation shall be the main method for translating the title of this book.Secondly, parenthesis is a special syntactic phenomenon.Since English sentences and Chinese sentences are constructed following different syntactic rules, parentheses appear in different positions in two languages. When parentheses are translated into Chinese,it is necessary to pay special attention to the word order.Thirdly,English sentences tend to be longer and more complex than the Chinese ones.It is advisable for translators to divide the long sentence into smaller units, analyze the syntactic structure and rearrange the sentences in a simpler, more direct and more conventional way.
