On Post-Editing Of Machine Translation —A Report Of Translating Translation And Web Localization (Excerpts) With Trados

In recent years,with the boom of the translation market and the continuous progress of modern information technology,MT(Machine Translation)has gained unprecedented development.At present,people tend to take advantage of MT translation with two major methods,namely,HAMT(Human Assisted Machine Translation)and MAHT(Machine Assisted Human Translation).HAMT refers that translators edit the translation produced by MT engines.During the process,translators play an important role in recognizing and correcting the errors caused by MT engines,thus enhancing the usability of MT translation.In other words,PE(Post Editing)is indispensable to improve the quality of MT translation.Thus the author summarized the common errors in MT translation and their solutions by virtue of the project.As a student majoring in translation and localization management,the author attempted to translate Translation and Web Localization with Beglobal Community and edit the MT translation with Trados.It is hoped to promote the knowledge about localization while improving the author's own PE skills through this project.Besides,as English for Science and Technology(EST),the text involves many terminologies,making it possible to be processed by an MT engine.Based on the common statistics-based MT error models proposed by others and the translation project,the author found that translators should edit MT translation in the order of lexical,syntactic and discourse level,and summarized the common errors.At lexical level,mistranslation is the most frequent error which should be dealt with by correcting the translation of a certain word or a phrase;at syntactic level,inappropriate order of words becomes the commonest error which should be coped with by adapting the order of words based on the practice of target languages;at discourse level,redundancy becomes the most serious problem which should be avoided by extracting the MT translation on the premise of maintaining the original meaning.In doing so,the author sought to make some contribution to improving post-editing efficiency through the project.
