Difficulties And Coping Solutions In Technical Interpreting

Armstrong International,an American company sent a Belgian engineer to its Guangzhou office in July 2016 to hear the regular working report and serve as a technical consultant in business negotiations with several local firms.The author worked as an interpreter for this project and was mainly responsible for ensuring the effective communication between different parties on steam products like control valve.In the course of the technical interpreting,the author faced several difficulties,including lack of professional knowledge about steam,poor psychological qualities and the accent of the speaker.This report aims to make an in-depth analysis of the difficulties mentioned above and discuss the solutions he used in this task.First,full preparation for the background information,terms and professional knowledge must be made before technical interpreting and also psychological preparation is a must for interpreters.Second,necessary emergency solutions should be adopted.The author puts forward with three ways to deal with technical terms and jargon--inquiry,omission and visualization.This report is expected to shed some new lights on relevant studies on technical interpreting.
