| Emma is a novel written by Jane Austen,which contains distinctive personal characteristics and rich plots.Nowadays,more and more Chinese versions of Emma have appeared.This dissertation focuses on a comparative analysis of Pan Hualing's version translated in 2011 and Sun Zhili's version translated in 2009,and discusses which version is more loyal to the source text.Also discussed is which version better complies with the thinking and expressive customs of the target readers living in the 21 st century while making use of context translation mode.The context translation mode including both the communicative and pragmatic dimension of context focuses on communicative and pragmatic effect respectively.As for communicative dimension of context,this dissertation deals with the comparative analysis of words,phrases,sentences and paragraphs in accordance with language users and language use.Concerning the pragmatic dimension of context,this dissertation mainly utilizes speech act theory and cooperative principles.The transferring of illocutionary meaning and conversational implicature are explored based on the specific context.At last,it is concluded that both versions have their own features.Firstly,Sun's version pays more attention to contextual factors,for it chooses words and makes sentences in accordance with each situation.The characters' feelings and intentions are taken into account in transferring illocutionary meaning and conversational implicature.Secondly,during the translation process,Sun makes some adjustments in sentence structure to adapt to the needs of target readers.However,Pan pays more attention to the equivalence with the source text in linguistic and semantic terms,but fails to consider the contextual factors for target readers.Finally,the literal and free translation methods are utilized in Sun's version,which focuses on both the content equivalence and target readers' requirements;whereas Pan mainly utilizes literal translation approach. |
