Journalistic translation is a popular subject of study for a large number of scholars. In an increasingly globalized world where cross-cultural cultural communication has become the new norm, journalistic translation is a very important part to play.Since journalism is the essential vehicle for information dissemination, journalistic translation study is of both theoretical and practical significance. The Financial Times is a high-ranking news agency in the reporting of economic and politic issues. Its target readership mainly consists of economic analysts,policy-makers,business leaders and financial scholars. The research on the translation of the Financial Times could produce great benefits for Chinese people,as it could help Chinese readers understand the current economic news and help shape decisions in the Chinese financial market. The study is intended to conduct a discussion on the translation of the Financial Times by applying Christiane Nord's text analysis theory to the translation approach of two news articles from the Financial Times. It will cover both extra-textual factors and intra-textual factors in the text analysis, with a view to understanding the real role of text analysis in journalistic translation. The major questions that the current study attempts to address include:(1)What is text analysis and what steps we have to follow in order to conduct text analysis in the process of translation?(2)How could text analysis theory help shape our translation approaches and strategies?(3)What is the role of text analysis where journalistic translation is concerned?Christiane Nord was an important figure representing the German functionalism theories. In her description, text analysis could be divided into extra-textual factors analysis and intra-textual factors analysis.Within her theoretical framework and based on the two news articles, the current study examines the identity of the sender, the intention of the sender, the audience, the medium for the message, time, place and motive for the production of the text and the text functions. On the other hand,intra-textual factors are to be discussed as well, including the subject matter, presuppositions, content, lexis and sentence structure. Conclusions are reached concerning the role and impact of the application of text analysis to translation.Where extra-textual analysis is concerned,it is very helpful in that it provides us a bigger picture of the source text, which in turn sets our expectations on our translation approach. In terms of the intra-textual analysis,it can help confirm the previous conclusions and correct our expectations on our translation approach. In a sense,intra-textual analysis offers us the chance to have a more intimate relationship with the text and help develop appropriate translation strategies in response.
