A Study On The English Version Of Li Bai's Poetry Based On Xu Yuanchong's "Three Beauties Principle"

Li Bai's poetry is characterized by deep implications,concise words and graceful artistic conceptions,which has aroused the attention of translators and researchers both at home and abroad since the 18 th century.With the deepening of cultural communication between China and western countries,many Chinese and foreign translators devote themselves to the study on the translation of Li Bai's poetry.Xu Yuanchong makes a remarkable contribution to Chinese poetry translation.He proposes “Three Beauties Principle”: beauty in sense,beauty in sound and beauty in form,which plays an important role in poetry translation.It indicates that all the three aspects should be reproduced as much as possible.Therefore,the translated version of Li Bai's poetry is supposed to be first faithful to the original one and then reproduces the beauty of the poetry in the target language,which gradually becomes one of the indispensable criteria of the evaluation on the translation of Li Bai's poetry.The thesis analyzes Sun Dayu's version of Li Bai's poetry from three perspectives of “Three Beauties Principle”.In terms of beauty in sense,the study focuses on images,figures of speech and color words.As for beauty in sound,the study puts emphasis on the reproduction of rhymes,rhythms,reduplicated words and onomatopoeias in the English version of Li Bai's poetry.As for beauty in form,it presents the study on the visual beauty of Chinese characters,styles of poetry and antitheses.Judging from the examples shown in this thesis,“Three Beauties Principle” is feasible to be applied to the translation of Li Bai's poetry,but translators are supposed to hold a dialectical view to it.The thesis develops into five parts,including Introduction,Literature Review,“Three Beauties Principle”,Reproduction of Three Beauties in the Translation of Li Bai's Poetry and Conclusion.Chapter One briefly introduces the research background,the research significance and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two illustrates the literature review of this study,summarizing previous research on the translation of Li Bai's poetry both at home and abroad and English versions of Li Bai's poetry.Chapter Three states “Three Beauties Principle”: beauty in sense,beauty in form and beauty in sound.Chapter Four mainly focuses on the analysis on Sun Dayu's version of Li Bai's poetry under the guidance of “Three Beauties Principle”.Chapter Five is Conclusion.
