The Aesthetic Reproduction Of Lun Yu From Three Beauties Principle

Lun Yu records the sayings and conducts of Confucius and his disciples,consisting of twenty chapters, which involve culture, ethics, education, religion, politics and many other aspects, whose significance is beyond words. The language is plain yet worth elaborate thinking, concise yet deserves deep consideration. Even a single character or a short sentence can reflect comprehensive and profound meaning.As the important communication bridge between China and west, Lun Yu has been translated into various different English versions, some of the translators even devoted whole life to studying Chinese literature and spare every effort to translate the Chinese Classics. Generally speaking, translation has more than seven values, that is: social value, ethical value, cultural value, linguistic value, recreation value, historical value as well as aesthetic value. When many people come to translate Lun Yu, what the impressions Confucius leaves is strict, serious,solemn, stern, but in fact, he is passionate, enthusiastic, zealous, many concepts or thought about aesthetics has been hidden in his words.What Lun Yu has told us is not only the duties and stand norms,but also the inner longing from heart and joyfulness. Confucius's attitude towards education and cultivation should not only refer to the regulation and impetus, but also on the motivation of people's nature. Through the study of education and arts,people can be touched, appreciated and stimulated.In this paper, the author tries to carry out a comparative study of the two English versions of Lun Yu in the framework of Xu Yuanchong's Three Beauties theory. Wu Guozhen, Xiao Xiangwu, whose English versions not only convey the wisdom of Confucius and the spirit of Chinese,but also stand for nowadays' culture and way of life,from which we can benefit a lot. Through the process of citing examples, the author analyzes and compares different features of the two versions and examines the feasibility of applying Xu Yuanchong's aesthetics theory into the Lun Yu translations.Through the study,the author attempts to get a conclusion that Xu's Three Beauties Principle can not only be applied as the translation criteria for Chinese classical poetry,but also be used to evaluate other translation standard for Pre- Qin classical prose.The paper is totally divided into five chapters.Chapter one focuses on the general introduction of this thesis. Although Confucius has a strong sense of mission, his ultimate goal or wish is to bring the thought of harmony or peace to the world, so that not only the society can operate in order, but also people can feel the warm and tranquility in his inner heart, as well as keep a delighted and enthusiastic mood in his mind. Actually all about his views or thought have embodied in his dialogue, in which he has used a kind of warm and plain language to influence his disciples, undoubtedly speaking, generations from generations had been,have, and will have been influenced.Chapter two gives a literature review about this paper, since there are many studies about Lun Yu, the author here would like to choose and analyze some typical or well-known examples.Chapter three analyzes the theoretical perspective about the paper, the Three-Beauties Theory by Xu Yuanchong, that is, beauty in sense, beauty in sound and beauty in form.Chapter four analyzes and makes a comparison of two English versions of Lun Yu,and the attempts to reproduce their beauty from different aspects.Chapter five summarizes the thesis and also gives some limitations and suggestions about the study.
