Although the meaning that interpreters get of the Chinese original in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting is roughly the same, the styles of interpreters are usually different, due to their individual preference and knowledge background. This thesis studies the differences of interpreters' styles and the correlation between interpreters' styles and the quality of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. It further identifies specific stylistic factors affecting the interpreting quality and presents strategies to improve the interpreting quality.Based on the quantitative research method of Chen Yumin and the specific features of interpreters' styles,an adapted quantitative analysis system including 18 stylistic markers is put forward. And interpreting quality assessment criteria of this study is set out based on widely used assessment criteria at home and abroad. The experimental material used in this thesis is excerpted from Speech on Climate Change and China by Chinese Ambassador to the U.K.Fu Ying at the London School of Economics.Participants in the experiment are six second year students of MTI who have received consecutive interpreting training for one and a half years. The author makes quantitative and qualitative analysis of the records of their interpretation and concludes that there is a positive correlation between interpreters' styles and the quality of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. In relatively formal interpreting occasions, interpreting quality is better when the degree of stylistic formality is higher, and vice versa. However, such positive stylistic markers as subordinations and long sentences exert a negative effect on interpreting quality.Besides, this thesis provides suggestions for improving the quality of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.Sentence segmentation is necessary and long sentences had better be avoided.
