With the acceleration of global integration and international exchange, the role of news communication as an important means of cultural exchange cannot be underestimated. In order to spread international news rapidly and attract a broader audience in China, most texts of news on current affairs are illustrated with pictures, which could be combined with written signs to form multimodal metaphors. Therefore, the multimodal metaphors existed in English news texts have become a prominent part in the translation process. The proper translation of multimodal metaphors directly affects the dissemination and exchange of news information. In this regard, this thesis studies the translation of multimodal metaphors in English news on current affairs from the perspective of Multimodal Metaphor Theory and based on the News on Current Affairs Trans-editing Project of Huanqiu.com.In news on current affairs, information is transmitted via one or more symbols, such as written symbols, image and colors, thereby constituting multimodal metaphors in which the source and target domains are represented by different modalities. To achieve this purpose, this thesis conducts a systematic research and analysis on multimodal metaphors in texts of English news on current affairs by adopting MIPVU and a method proposed by Sobrino according to a self-compiled corpus and employing qualitative and quantitative research methods.Based on the types of news texts, this study divides multimodal metaphors into four types: multimodal metaphors involved economy, diplomacy, military and social affairs. Finally, four translation techniques are summarized under the guidance of overt and covert translation strategies by combining the characteristics of multimodal metaphors and case analysis of specific translation practice.
