A Study On E-C Translation Of Multimodal Metaphors In Auto News

Over the last decade,the development of networked and collaborative technologies has fostered the emergence of new forms of online auto news.In the process of participating in the translation practice of online auto news,the author finds that one of the most frequent varieties of multimodal metaphor is no doubt the type combining an image and a written term in auto news.Multimodal metaphors can help readers interpret the news fact,create attractiveness,and contribute to vividness,novelty and uniqueness of news language.However,how to use multimodal metaphors to effectively communicate information through the interaction and integration of visual images and written words is a problem in auto news translation.Furthermore,previous studies on metaphor translation mainly focus on verbal metaphors,but few studies on multimodal metaphor translation are conducted.This thesis attempts to solve the translation problems of multimodal metaphor in auto news,hoping to fill the gap in the research field of multimodal metaphor translation.In order to address this problem,on the basis of 82 articles selected from the Auto News Trans-Editing Program of Huanqiu website,the thesis investigates the multimodal metaphors in auto news.In this thesis,mainly four problems are solved,i.e.,identification,classification,comprehension and translation of multimodal metaphors.Firstly,multimodal metaphors are effectively identified according to the MIPVU and the three criteria proposed by Forceville.Secondly,the thesis classifies the multimodal metaphors according to the mapping relation,and conducts a systematic feature analysis under the guidance of the multimodal metaphor theory(MMT).Thirdly,the thesis analyses the manifestation of the source domain and target domain in pictorial and textual modalities via detailed translation case studies in order to clarify the construction and interpretation of multimodal metaphors in detail.Finally,from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis(MDA),the thesis dissects the text-image relation,studies the translation of multimodal metaphors according to the relational correspondence between image and text in multimodal metaphors,i.e.,COSMOROE,and attempts to summarize five translation techniques.
