A Study On C-E Metaphor Translation From The Perspective Of Functionalism With Drama As The Source Domain

Metaphor,as a far-reaching field in translation studies,has been deeply probed into by many translators.Most of the existing studies are confined to the pure linguistic and rhetorical level of metaphor translation,but the field of dramatic metaphor translation is lagging behind with respect to this trend.Therefore,the research of dramatic metaphor translation is of great significance.This thesis attempts to concentrate on dramatic metaphors from source domain to provide reference for the metaphor translation under the guidance of functionalism.In order to deepen the research,the thesis identifies dramatic metaphors from the author's translation practice with the aid of corpus-based Metaphorical Pattern Analysis(MPA),classifies these metaphors in quantitative and qualitative methods and sums up the three features of familiarity,incongruity and originality.Meanwhile,an interview analysis among translators and proofreaders is carried out to collect the difficulties they encounter in the translation process and then analyzes the causes of the major difficulties of the translation of classical Chinese poems and idioms.On the basis of metaphor research from source domain,the thesis puts forward two different methods of liberal translation and zero translation under the guidance of Nord's functionalism and lists a large number of real examples to further prove their feasibility.The thesis analyzes the translation of dramatic metaphors from the perspective of functionalism to enrich the development of metaphor translation research and make contributions to the future research in this field.
