| The translation report investigates what kinds of translation strategies can be used when translator encounters a series of typical problems in the translation process of a film script. It is based on the translation practice of the Script of The Kingdom by the Sea.The script introduces amazing stories behind historic buildings of Amsterdam, which aims to present the Dutch culture to audience.Five types of problems are found during the translation practice, all of which are obscure version, translation of culture-loaded expressions, redundency, misunderstandings and incomplete expressions. There are mainly five translation approaches adopted in the translation of this task: domestication, foreignization, condensation, paraphrase and expansion. The author is trying to demonstrate that communicative translation approach of Peter Newmark allows the translator to correct or improve what is obviously wrong in logic or ill-represented,to clarify ambiguity, and to level awkwardness with elegance.Based on the case analysis, the author believes that four qualities are required for translators, which are solid foundation of language, balance between accuracy and brevity, rich knowledge and competence of acquiring knowledge and using translation theory during translation practice. It is hoped that the translation strategies proposed for those problems the author found during the translation of the script can provide a reference for other MIT students who may have the same experience. |
